Alaska exported $103 million to Switzerland in 2005, primarily gold. Gold from Fort Knox Gold Mine bolstered by continued strong prices accounted for $81 million, lead ore for $16 million, platinum for $3 million, and seafood for $3 million.

Fort Knox Gold Mine was originally permitted in 1994 and commercial production began in 1997. Kinross Gold Corporation acquired the mine in 1998. The operation currently employs 400 to 450 people year round.

The export of Alaska seafood directly to Switzerland rather than through buyers in other European countries has helped to substantially increase export numbers. The country’s high per capita income and consumer interest in high quality food make it a natural market for Alaska’s seafood.
