Strong gold prices continue to fuel exports to Switzerland. Virtually all of Alaska’s $89 million in gold sales went to Switzerland in 2004. Fort Knox Gold Mine, a subsidiary of Kinross Gold Corporation, is Alaska’s largest gold mining operation and employs more than 250 people year-round.
Seafood exports to Switzerland climbed this year to three million dollars. Although Switzerland has a smaller population than most EU countries, its high living standards make it a market for Alaska’s premium wild seafood. Seafood exports destined directly for Switzerland, rather than an intermediary European stops, help to account for the significant increase in numbers.
