International / Northern Regional Cooperation

  • The eight-nation Arctic Council includes Canada and the United States, thanks to Alaska’s position, along with Russia and the Scandinavian countries. The Council focuses on such areas as sustainable development, arctic tourism, infrastructure development and environmental protection.

  • Alaska and Canada cooperate in many areas and numerous organizations dedicated to arctic research, circumpolar health, economic development, education, energy, environment, northern indigenous peoples, science, trade, technology and other areas of common concern to northern governments and peoples.

  • The Alaska National Guard and Alaska-based military conduct periodic joint training with Canada and have included Russia in three-nation exercises.
