WHEREAS, the safety, nurturing, and development of Alaska’s children is the foundation on which we are building the future of our great state; and
WHEREAS, every child needs the security, encouragement, and cultural continuity that a permanent home provides; and
WHEREAS, among our future leaders, innovators, and citizens are more than 2,000 children living in out-of-home care in Alaska. For those children who cannot return to the home of their birth parents, adoption is a path to providing a permanent, loving home; and
WHEREAS, during fiscal year 2009, 329 former foster children achieved finalized adoption with families in Alaska; and
WHEREAS, families throughout Alaska can and do open their homes to children in need, providing support, offering guidance, and strengthening the bonds that sustain and enrich us as individuals, neighborhoods, and communities; and
WHEREAS, we honor foster and adoptive parents for the investments they dedicate to children and their futures; and
WHEREAS, strong families are the heart of our communities and the backbone of our achievements, and children waiting for adoptive families need our aid and support.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim November 2009 as:
Adoption Awareness Month
in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to be part of the effort to provide all our children with safe, secure, nurturing families.
