State Flags Lowered for Fmr. Rep. Montgomery

October 16, 2013, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell has ordered state flags to be lowered to half-staff on Thursday in honor of former Alaska Representative Joe Montgomery. Representative Montgomery died on October 5 at the age of 95.

Representative Montgomery arrived in Alaska on a steamship in the early 1940s. He went on to serve as a B-17 pilot during World War II and later worked for the Anchorage School District in a variety of positions, including teacher, counselor, principal, and superintendent. After retiring from education, he was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives, serving from 1979 to 1983.

Montgomery was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Ebba. He is survived by his daughters, Julie and Marilyn Jo. State flags will be lowered on Thursday, October 17 and raised to full-staff at sunset.
