Governor's House Celebrates Centennial
July 16, 2012, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell and First Lady Sandy Parnell invite Alaskans to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the historic Alaska Governor’s House.
One hundred years ago construction began on the District of Alaska’s “Executive Mansion,” authorized by Congress to be built and furnished for $40,000. The residence in Juneau was completed and furnished by late December, 1912, during the term of Territorial Governor Walter Eli Clark.
The House’s north lawn will be the site of the community celebration from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on July 19. Guided tours of the home’s first level will also be given. The governor and first lady have invited all former governors and their families to attend the celebration that will include remarks from former Governor Bill Sheffield and former Juneau State Senator Clark Gruening, whose grandfather served as governor for 14 years.
The celebration is appropriate for all ages and will include cookies, popcorn, lemonade, and music by the Alaska String Band, featuring the Zahasky Family.
