Volume 1 February 24th, 2006
Historic Oil Tax Legislation Proposed By Governor Murkowski.
After much anticipation, the Governor unveiled his oil tax legislation on Tuesday at a press conference in Anchorage.
Hearings on Governor Murkowski's oil tax legislation are now in full swing in Juneau in the House and Senate Resources
Committees. The last three days have included presentations from Administration representatives and additional hearings
are scheduled next week. Public testimony will occur on Saturday, February 25, so contact your local Legislative Information
Office for information on how you can participate in this important process:

What about the merits of this needed oil tax reform measure?
- If passed, this legislation would provide $1 billion in added revenue to the state at current prices to pay for education, roads, public safety and other services which all Alaskans rely upon.
- Alaskans would finally get a fair share of oil tax revenue, compared to what the producers receive elsewhere in the world.
- The legislation provides incentives for new exploration and development - more exploration means more barrels in the pipeline and ultimately more jobs for Alaskans and revenue in the treasury.
And, keep in mind, the production tax is not the only tax paid by oil companies in Alaska. They also pay royalties,
corporate income tax and property tax.
This production tax provides needed revenue today and secures our economic future though facilitating development
of a gas pipeline contract. Tuesday's announcement was a great success - and a great step on the path to a bright
future for Alaska.
