Training and Outreach

The Office of Equal Employment Opportunity (OEEO) provides EEO and diversity training for state managers, supervisors and employees. This training is available at no cost, with the exception of travel expenses.

The Division of Personnel Training and Development section is presently working on a curriculum and schedule for mandatory diversity training and informal complaint procedures as required by Administrative Order No. 195. For information about this process, contact Missouri Smyth (465-4058) or doptraining@admin.state.ak.us.

Pending completion of the mandatory outlines, OEEO's workshops on "Valuing Diversity at Work," "EEO Orientation for Employees," and "EEO Orientation for Supervisiors" are available on request after discussion of specific audience needs. Requests for small group discussions are welcome and can usually be scheduled quickly.

OEEO conducts outreach at cultural events, minority organization activities and public school activities. Guest speakers from OEEO are available for events or meetings. OEEO also participates in cultural heritage events sponsored by the Diversity Awareness Team, a public/private partnership seeking a world where people respect and value each other.

Valuing Diversity at Work

Topics include awareness of cultural differences and identification of prejudice. Participants will also work on advantages and difficulties of working in a multicultural workplace.

EEO Orientation for Employees
Informal question and answer session concerning rights and responsibilities of Executive Branch employees under equal employment opportunity and affirmative action. Participants are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch.

EEO for Supervisors & Managers
The object of this course is to provide participants with a current snapshot of Employment Discrimination Laws, the enforcement agencies, and an understanding of the relationship between affirmative action and Equal Employment Opportunity. It includes recognition of applicable statutes, protected classes, actions covered by law, and types of discrimination recognized by courts. Commitment is sought to take actions that are job-related, objective and consistent.

"BLUE-EYED"
The object of this course is to examine the role individuals and groups can undertake to eliminate prejudice and discrimination. A video features Jane Elliott with a multiracial group of adults participating in an exercise where eye color is the basis for how people are treated. Ms. Elliott created the exercise in the late 60s for her third grade classes. Local discussion will focus on recognizing discrimination and working together to eliminate it.
