Alaska - Alberta Bilateral Council Board: Alaska - Alberta Bilateral CouncilBoard identification number: 207 Department: OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR Authority: MOU W/AK and Alberta Status: Active Sunset date: Requirements: No Legislative Confirmation or Financial Disclosure required Prohibitions: None Term: No defined term Description: Appropriate bodies for each of the parties will appoint council delegates who may include legislators, government officials and representatives of private industry as well as other areas of mutual interest. Delegates may come from such sectors as oil and gas, transportation, mining, banking, telecommunications, tourism, agriculture, education, Native interests, and health. Governor Palin is the appointing authority for Alaska delegates. Function: Provide direction on bilateral issues, review achievements, and explore new areas for cooperation. The Council will facilitate cooperation in a number of areas, including transportation, aboriginal issues, trade and investment, northern sustainable development, northern health issues, and tourism.As outlined in the memorandum of understanding and cooperation creating the council, alaska and alberta agree to pursue the following objectives: A) to promote common goals by encouraging cooperation and understanding between governments, business, legislators and citizens of Alaska and Alberta;B) to develop informal dispute avoidance and resolution processes to address potential cross border concerns;C) to work cooperatively to influence our respective federal governments' policies and decisions in areas of interest to both regions, in recognition of the fact that certain issues are beyond the jurisdiction of Alaska and Alberta;D) to learn from each others’ best practices and the world-class expertise in specific sectors that are found in both jurisdiction. Chair: Appointed by Governor Special facts: The Council may appoint advisory committees composed of individuals such as officials, industry representatives and experts for issues that cannot be resolved at Council meetings or interim discussions. Council established through a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation between the Government of Alaska and the Province of Alberta signed by Governor Murkowski and Premier Klein on May 17, 2004. Although there is no sunset date for the Council, the Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation will be reviewed annually by each jurisdiction and will remain in effect until one of the Parties notifies the other, in written form, of its intention to terminate.Serve at the Pleasure of the Governor Compensation: Standard Travel and Per Diem.
