Description: 11 members appointed by Governor (consideration given to geographical balance): broadly representative of all fields of performing, visual, and fine arts with consideration given to recommendations from organizations concerned/dealing with arts.
Function: To enrich the cultural life of the state by encouraging and supporting excellence in the arts; provide opportunities for every Alaskan to experience the arts; promote the practice and enjoyment of the arts in Alaska; guide the development of the arts throughout the state; provide technical assistance and services to artists, arts organizations, and arts supporters in Alaska. Members serve on panels which award grants to arts programs.
Chair: Governor selects
Special facts: Report to Governor/Legislature periodically; Governor designates chair and vice-chair; serve at pleasure of Governor. Panels which award grants include professionals in the field. Funds provided by Alaska State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency based in Washington, D.C.
Compensation: Standard Travel and Per Diem.
Meetings: 2-3 times per year, monthly audio conferences, 12-15 days maximum
