Grief Awareness Week  Print Now Printer Friendly

WHEREAS, each year approximately 5,000 people die in Alaska, leaving family members, friends, and colleagues to mourn their loss and adjust to the void that the death of a loved one leaves; and

WHEREAS, grieving is a natural reaction and healthy response to death and other tragedies; and

WHEREAS, cultural and religious traditions, as well as individual and community mourning rituals, promote spiritual, emotional, physical, and mental well-being following a loss; and

WHEREAS, learning about the grieving process contributes to a more supportive and healing environment for those who are in mourning.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim the week of November 1-7, 2009 as:

Grief Awareness Week

in Alaska, and encourage all citizens to recognize the healing power of grieving following the loss of a loved one.
