Hispanic Heritage Month
WHEREAS, America is a land of diversity which has greatly benefited from the many contributions of people of various backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, Hispanic Americans have made a positive impact on every part of our society through activities within the community - contributions to social, cultural, and civic causes, and commitment to economic growth and development; and
WHEREAS, the Hispanic community has contributed greatly to the defense of freedom, both at home and abroad. Since the United States became a country, Hispanic Americans have served valiantly in the United States military, and we are grateful for the courage and sacrifice of the many Hispanic Americans currently in the military in keeping our nation safe; and
WHEREAS, to honor the achievements of Hispanic Americans, the United States Congress created Public Law 100-402 as amended, designating September 15 through October 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month. In Alaska, we recognize the proud history and rich culture of Hispanic Americans.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim September 15 - October 15, 2009 as:
Hispanic Heritage Month
in Alaska, and encourage all citizens of Alaska to celebrate and recognize the vital role of Hispanic Americans in the development of our State and nation.
