United States Constitution Week  Print Now Printer Friendly

WHEREAS, 222 years ago, on September 17, 1787, the United States Constitution was signed by 55 delegates at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia’s Independence Hall to become the ultimate foundation of the United States of America and all that we stand for; and

WHEREAS, the Constitution created a government of the people, by the people, for the people, and is the oldest, written constitution that has continually remained in effect in the world; and

WHEREAS, written with the blood and passion of freedom, taking the time to appreciate this foundational manuscript helps all of us to better understand and exercise our rights and liberties as citizens of the United States; and

WHEREAS, the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution are fought for each and every day by American citizens who serve our great country and should always be celebrated, valued, and honored; and

WHEREAS, on this day, people have the opportunity to reflect on the Constitution, its history, and its continuing relevance to our daily lives;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim September 17-23, 2009 as:

United States Constitution Week

in Alaska, and encourage all residents to reaffirm their appreciation for the unique and precious heritage of the United States Constitution and all that it stands for.
