POW/MIA Recognition Day
WHEREAS, Americans held as prisoners of war and those still listed as missing in action have been called upon to make uncommon sacrifices. In fulfilling their duties as citizens of the United States, they have defended our freedom and way of life while suffering unimaginable indignities and harm under the absolute control of the enemy; and
WHEREAS, each year, on the third Friday of September, the State of Alaska joins the nation to honor more than 88,000 Americans who were prisoners of war or remain missing in action, and recognize them for the bravery and determination they have shown in the face of unspeakable hardships. We also especially remember the sacrifices of their families who must courageously face each day without knowing the fate of their loved ones; and
WHEREAS, the State of Alaska commemorates this day by pledging our solemn commitment to the brave men and women who have been imprisoned while serving in conflicts around the world, and to those who still remain unaccounted for. We will always remember these American heroes, and continue to demand the fullest possible accounting for every missing member of our Armed Forces;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim September 18, 2009 as:
POW/MIA Recognition Day
in Alaska, and call upon Alaskans to join me in honoring and remembering all former American prisoners of war, those missing in action or unaccounted for, and their families.
Date: September 8, 2009
