Senator Daniel Inouye Day
WHEREAS, United States Senator Daniel Inouye is a longtime and valued friend to Alaska, a decorated wartime veteran and hero, a long-serving and ranking member of the United States Senate from the State of Hawaii, and a friend and ally to many; and
WHEREAS, Senator Inouye was born September 7, 1924, to parents he calls his heroes; and
WHEREAS, following the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Senator Inouye entered the United States military, serving with bravery and dignity in the Army’s 442nd Regimental Combat Team – the most decorated army unit of its size in the history of America; and
WHEREAS, having held elected office since before Hawaii attained statehood in 1959, Senator Inouye continues to serve his country with distinction as the third most senior member of the United States Senate, currently serving as chairman for the Appropriations Committee and as a senior member of the Commerce, Science, and Transportation, Rules and Administration, and Indian Affairs Committees; and
WHEREAS, Senator Inouye continues his steadfast commitment for safeguarding national defense, and standing up for the concerns of our nation’s veterans and Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and American Indians; and
WHEREAS, Senator Inouye has long been an ally to Alaska, giving support on many key issues important to the citizens of this great state; and
WHEREAS, known affectionately as “Alaska’s Third Senator,” Senator Inouye has dedicated years of selfless service to our state and nation and holds a place of valor in Alaska’s heart and history;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim September 7, 2009 as:
Senator Daniel Inouye Day
in Alaska, and encourage all citizens to recognize the dedication and selfless service Senator Inouye gave to Alaska and our country.
