Governor Parnell Mourns the Loss of Fort Richardson Paratrooper

September 8, 2009, Anchorage, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell offered his condolences to the family of a Fort Richardson soldier who was killed in Afghanistan on September 6.

“Staff Sergeant Michael Murphrey’s dedication and commitment to his country will never be forgotten,” Governor Parnell said. “His wife and children are in our prayers during this difficult time. Sandy and I are grateful to all the men and women serving in the U.S. military.”

Murphrey, 25, of Texas, died in Paktika Province, Afghanistan, when his dismounted patrol encountered an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to C Company, 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.

A letter of condolence and state flag will be sent to his family.
